UPDATE

Japanese School System

Education in Japan is based on 6-3-3-4 system (6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior high school, 3 years of senior high school, and 4 years of university). The compulsory education period is a total of 9 years in elementary and junior high school. Junior high school graduates may choose to continue their education in senior high school, universities etc. School years start every April and end in March.

Elementary school / Junior high school

Children enter the first grade of elementary school in the April following their sixth birthday. Those who graduated from elementary schools enter the junior high school. Although foreign nationals are not subject to Japanese compulsory education, Japanese public elementary/junior high schools accept foreign children if they wish to enter. Guardians of these children need to undertake the necessary procedures at their local municipal office. If you wish to send your children to a private school or an international school, you need to apply directly at their office.

Children study at elementary school for 6 years and at junior high school for 3 years. The subjects they study include Japanese, social studies, arithmetic/mathematics, science, music, drawing and crafts, home economics, physical education, moral education, and foreign language (usually English). School lunch is provided in public elementary and junior high school. After school, students in most junior high school take part in extracurricular club activities. Most schools require their students to wear school uniforms. You have to pay as the cost of textbooks (only tuition and the cost of textbooks are free in public schools). Vacations are 6 weeks long during summer break (July-August) and about 2 weeks long during both in winter (December-January) and spring breaks (March).
