FACE program

One-to-one interaction between an international student and a Japanese volunteer

The FACE Program has been instituted by the University of Tokyo, International Center to promote Japanese-language based interaction between international students and Japanese students or citizens.

Many international students studying in Japan express that they want mores chances to meet with Japanese people. Especially for graduate school students, although they stay in Japan for a long period of time, the time passes so fast and due to the busy schedule of their research activitys, it is not easy to find many opportunities to make friends with Japanese people or gain exposure to natural Japanese language as used in everyday life. These students wish to get to know Japanese society, the way Japanese people think, and how they lead their daily lives.

FACE volunteers are native or near-native Japanese speakers who wish to meet and support international students. Based on the students profile and interests which are recorded during the registration process, students and volunteers will be matched together. After we introduce you to your volunteer, it is all up to you and your volunteer to decide what you will do together. You may be able to have a close “family friend”, or a long-lasting friendship that continues even after you return to your home country. It is an unrestricted program, only asking you to interact with each other in Japanese language. All volunteers are looking forward to meeting with international students.

The volunteers include a wide variety of people. Our hope is that this program gives international students a good opportunity to experience and understand Japanese society and Japanese people by actually meeting them, not just knowledge about Japan that you hear from your friends. We believe this program will help you to gain a rich experience while you continue your life in Japan.
